The Off Season
Before all this, Gumbo had a chair. The chair faced the sea. Nobody knew how long he'd been sitting there. Nobody asked. The towel on the diving board has been drying since 2019.

Chapter 02
The Call
They called anyway. Solana needed someone with absolutely no urgency. He took the call doing 300 through hyperspace, one hand on the wheel. The passenger was not asked if he wanted to come.
"yeah. i'm on my way. no, i won't hurry."
Chapter 03
The Run
Everyone ran away from the fire. Gumbo ran toward it. Not out of bravery. Someone on the other side was holding a sandwich, and it looked like a good sandwich.
"it was a good sandwich."
Chapter 04
The Finish
Stadium. Rain. Lightning. Ninetieth minute. The whole chain was watching. Gumbo did not score the goal. Gumbo became the goal. The net has not been the same.
"football is easy. you just go in the net."
Chapter 05
The Aftermath
Night one of the takeover. The money came in. He did not celebrate. He did not tweet. He just lay there, in his blazer, staring at the ceiling, like a man who knew it was coming.
"wake me up at a billion."
